Mission Statement
The Santa Barbara Printmakers are a group of artists dedicated to promoting and producing art work that uses hand and press printing techniques for the purposes of artistic exploration and expression. Images by artists in this group have been made with printing processes that include: etching, monotype, woodblock, collagraph, linocut, clay, lithography and digital programming. Santa Barbara Printmakers provides exhibition opportunities several times a year, as well as information about printmaking activites in the Santa Barbara area via their website, blog and email list serve. Its membership encompasses both emerging and established artists.
HistoryThe current Santa Barbara Printmakers community evolved from a small group of artists known as the Monotype Guild, who in 1989 started creating one-of-a-kind prints in weekly workshops and occasionally presented exhibits of their work. The membership greatly expanded with the decision to include all types of hand-pulled prints in the group's annual Open Juried Show, now in it's 14th year, and is no longer limited to residents of the Tri-Counties—Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo. Now 65 members strong and a newly appointed steering committee to guide the membership, Santa Barbara Printmakers has launched a website to promote its members and a blog that feeds the community of printers with opportunities, growing class offerings and member news.
MembershipSanta Barbara Printmakers is open to all artists who are accepted into one of our annual Open Juried Shows (check calendar for next showing). Entries are limited to hand pulled prints in a wide variety of techniques, from the traditional linocuts, woodcuts, serigraphs, etchings, lithographs, collagraphs and monotypes, to contemporary innovations which make use of the latest technologies. Yearly dues are $25 and meetings are held as needed to plan upcoming events.
The membership fee entitles members to: minutes of steering committee meetings, announcements for printmaking events and related opportunities in the area, representation on the SBP website, inclusion in member only exhibitions, and notification of the annual SBP Open Juried exhibit.
